2-Pyridinylmethyl 2-(4-isobutylphenyl)propanoate is an anti-inflammatory drug that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. This drug is a prodrug that is metabolized by esterases to release the active form, 2-pyridinylmethyl 2-(4-isobutylphenyl)propanoate acid. The prodrugs are converted to the active form by hydrolysis, which occurs at higher rates when they are present in biological fluids with high concentrations of esterases. This drug has also been shown to have therapeutic effects in infectious diseases, inflammatory skin diseases, and autoimmune diseases. It may also be used to treat HIV infection because it inhibits the production of virus particles and reduces viral load.
