Pericyclivine is a monoterpenoid indole alkaloid. It is a cytotoxic agent that binds to the indole nucleus of vinblastine and other apocynaceae alkaloids, as well as nucleophilic groups present in proteins and nucleic acids. Pericyclivine has been shown to be active against cancer cells in cell culture and has significant cytotoxicity. It also inhibits blood pressure by blocking the effects of angiotensin II, which can lead to heart disease, renal failure, and stroke. The drug's mechanism of action appears to involve inhibiting the production of renin, an enzyme that converts angiotensinogen into angiotensin I. Induction of this pathway leads to increased levels of angiotensin II, which causes high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems.
