Polyvinyl alcohol is a polymer that is used in wastewater treatment. It is prepared by the hydrolysis of polyvinyl acetate and has been shown to have an excellent performance in removing benzalkonium chloride from wastewater. The crystalline cellulose content of polyvinyl alcohol is about 35%. This polymer undergoes intramolecular hydrogen bonding with hydrogen ions and also has a thermal expansion coefficient of 1.5-2 times higher than that of water. Polyvinyl alcohol can be used as a model system for studying autoimmune diseases, such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis. Preparative high-performance liquid chromatography (prep-HPLC) using sodium citrate as an eluent can be used to separate methyl ethyl ketones (MEK) from water vapor.
