Pifithrin-mu (PFTM) is a pro-apoptotic protein that has shown anti-cancer activity. It binds to the intracellular targets of PFTM and induces apoptosis by triggering the release of cytochrome c from mitochondria, which leads to the activation of caspases, a series of proteases that lead to cell death. PFTM also inhibits tumor growth in vitro and in vivo by inhibiting autophagy and inhibiting the production of hydrogen peroxide, which is an important source of reactive oxygen species. In addition, PFTM has been shown to inhibit cellular transformation by targeting proteins involved in DNA repair pathways. This agent also has been shown to be able to induce pluripotent cells and can act as a molecular docking molecule for Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2).
