Propamocarb is an antimicrobial agent that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the ATP-binding cassette transporter and inhibiting energy metabolism. It has been shown to inhibit the polymerase chain reaction of DNA and RNA, which leads to a reduction in bacterial replication. Propamocarb also blocks fatty acid synthesis and mitochondrial membrane potential. Propamocarb is used as a sample preparation reagent for genotoxicity studies, where it has been shown to have genotoxic effects through the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). This compound is also used as an analytical method for detecting metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus or obesity.
