Pinane, endo+exo is a fluorescent probe that can be activated by light. It reacts with ester hydrochlorides to form carboxylic acid derivatives, which are then analyzed by mass spectrometry. Pinane, endo+exo is used in the determination of receptor activity, and has been shown to react with hydrogen-bonded intramolecular hydrogen in the formation of an excited state. The reaction mechanism is based on the acidity of hydrochloric acid and steric interactions between α-pinene and fatty acids.
