1-Phenylpyrazole is a nitro compound that can be converted to an alkoxy radical by light. It has been shown to be toxic to animals at high doses and has photochemical properties that make it useful in vitro assays. 1-Phenylpyrazole has been found to be a liver carcinogen in rats and mice, although it is not believed to be carcinogenic in humans. The presence of the pyrazole ring may also contribute to its anti-inflammatory activity. 1-Phenylpyrazole can also bind fluorine, picolinic acid, ethyl formate, and human liver cancer cells. Studies have shown that 1-phenylpyrazole inhibits herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) replication in vitro and blocks binding of the ryanodine receptor to calcium ions.
