The molecule of 1,5-pentanedithiol is a thiol which has been used as the basis for the design of a novel biosensor that can be used to detect low concentrations of glucose. The sensor consists of an amperometric electrode with a gold surface and a silver film that interacts with the molecule. This interaction alters the optical properties of the molecule and results in different absorption spectra when it is exposed to glucose. The change in optical properties is measured by recording the intensity of light emitted from the molecule at different wavelengths.
The following are some key features:
- Inexpensive
- Simple
- Non-invasive
- Rapid response time
- Low detection limit
