Z-DL-Phe-OH is a potent and selective inhibitor of serine protease. It is an irreversible inhibitor that binds to the active site of the enzyme and blocks the formation of the substrate-enzyme complex, inhibiting protein synthesis. Z-DL-Phe-OH has been shown to inhibit trypsin, chymotrypsin, carboxypeptidase A, papain and elastase. This compound also inhibits aminopeptidases such as leucine aminopeptidase (LAP) and aminopeptidase N (APN). In addition, it inhibits dipeptidyl peptidases IV (DP IV), which are enzymes that break down amino acid chains into individual amino acids.
