Pyrantel is an anthelmintic drug that is used to treat endoparasites. It has been shown to be effective against a range of parasites, including roundworms, hookworms, and tapeworms. Pyrantel pamoate is a combination of the active ingredient pyrantel with pamoate acid, which enhances its activity against hookworms. This drug inhibits the release of acetylcholine by binding to cholinergic receptors on the muscle membrane of worms. Pyrantel has synergistic effects when combined with other drugs such as levamisole or albendazole. However, it does not work well against some parasitic infections such as ascariasis and trichuriasis because these worms have developed resistance to this drug.
