Pentagastrin is a peptide hormone that is involved in the regulation of gastric acid secretion. It is used to diagnose and study gastrin-secreting tumors, as well as to treat some types of infectious diseases. Pentagastrin binds to the pentagastrin receptors on the surface of cells, stimulating the production and release of stomach acid. Pentagastrin also has been shown to have therapeutic effects in metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus and autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
