2-Phenethyl-Piperidine is a tetraponerine that has antiarrhythmic properties. It is an antagonist at potassium channels, which alters the ionic flow of potassium ions into and out of cells. 2-Phenethyl-Piperidine also has nitrogen heterocycles that may be substituted with groups such as alkyl, alkoxy, aryl, and amino. The substituents on these heterocycles are important to the pharmacological activity of 2-phenethylpiperidine. 2-Phenethyl-piperidine is used in medicine as a substitute for lidocaine due to its similar chemical structure. It can also be used in chemistry experiments because it contains nitrogen heterocycles that are often studied in organic chemistry classes. 2-Phenethyl-piperidine can be synthesized from thiourea and imino compounds by reacting them with esters or azacycles.
