(R)-3-Phenylcyclopentanone is used as a catalyst in enantioselective reactions. It is a chiral molecule that can be used to synthesize other chiral molecules. The (R)-enantiomer of this compound is the more active form and has been shown to catalyze reactions with high efficiency and enantioselectivity. The racemic mixture of this compound consists of two stereoisomers, one of which is the (S)-enantiomer. This compound can also be used as a coalescence mediator in organic synthesis because it can form covalent bonds with both reactants and products. The nature of the substituents on this molecule determines how it will react with other substances. For example, if the substituents are phosphorus atoms then they will react with organic compounds containing sulfur atoms, such as phenylboronic acid or cyclic compounds.
