Pancreatic polypeptide, human (PP) is a peptide hormone that is secreted by the pancreas. It is a precursor of pancreatic polypeptide, which in turn is a precursor of insulin. Pancreatic polypeptide also plays an important role in the regulation of appetite and food intake. PP may be used to diagnose conditions such as hyperparathyroidism, chronic renal failure, and diabetes mellitus type 1. This hormone has been shown to stimulate growth factor release in cultured cells and has vasoactive intestinal peptide-like activity.
