Pentafluorophenylacetonitrile is an organic compound that belongs to the class of electron-deficient compounds. It is a colorless liquid with a strong smell and chemical properties that are similar to those of malonic acid. Pentafluorophenylacetonitrile has been shown to have degenerative effects in living organisms, such as the inhibition of electron transfer, which may be caused by its ability to bind to the molecules needed for electron transport. This compound has also been used in the asymmetric synthesis of other aromatic hydrocarbons and has been isolated at a yield of about 85%. Pentafluorophenylacetonitrile is able to emit light when excited by electrons, emitting blue light with low energy. The molecule's transport properties allow it to move easily through cell membranes, making it useful in microlenses and molecular switches.
