Potassium pentafluorophenolate is a hydrolysis product of perfluorinated organometallic compounds. It can be synthesized from trifluoroacetic acid and metal hydroxides, such as potassium hydroxide or sodium sulfide. Potassium pentafluorophenolate has the ability to react with primary amines to form an alkynyl group, which is nucleophilic in nature. This compound is used as a catalyst for polymerization reactions, esterification reactions, and cleavage reactions. The chemical shifts observed in the nmr spectra of potassium pentafluorophenolate are indicative of its fluorine-containing structure.
