Mono(2-ethyl-5-oxohexyl) phthalate (MEHP) is a metabolite of the plasticizer di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) and is present in the urine of humans. MEHP has been shown to affect human metabolism by reducing insulin sensitivity and increasing body mass index. It also has an effect on human liver cells, as well as mitochondria, causing mitochondrial dysfunction and increased insulin resistance. MEHP appears to have a direct effect on the peroxisomes proliferation in animals, which may be due to its ability to activate PPARα. MEHP also increases fatty acid uptake into the liver cells, leading to increased fat accumulation in the liver. MEHP can also cause glomerular filtration rate reduction and chronic kidney disease.
