Rac threo-dihydro bupropion is an enzyme inhibitor that blocks the activity of the enzymes monoamine oxidase type A and B. Rac threo-dihydro bupropion inhibits the metabolic breakdown of neurotransmitters such as dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine which are produced by neurons in the central nervous system. It is used as a treatment for major depressive disorder, seasonal affective disorder, and bipolar depression. Rac threo-dihydro bupropion has also been shown to be effective in reducing weight gain in humans who have a body mass index greater than 25. The compound does not inhibit the activity of other human enzymes such as cytochrome P450 or CYP2D6. Rac threo-dihydro bupropion binds to 5-HT2 receptors on cells in the brain which produce serotonin.
