Timolol is a beta-blocker drug that interacts with the adrenergic receptor, which is found in the heart and other parts of the body. It blocks the action of epinephrine on these receptors, thus reducing heart rate and blood pressure. Timolol has been shown to lower blood glucose levels in rats. This drug also interacts with a number of proteins that regulate carbohydrate metabolism by inhibiting kinase activity and interacting with ATPase activity. Timolol has been shown to be an orally active agent that does not readily cross the blood-brain barrier.
