Sodium selenate decahydrate is a hydrated compound that contains selenium. It is used as an optical sensor to measure silver ions in wastewater. The presence of silver ions can be detected by the spectral shift in the visible region of the spectrum when it interacts with sodium selenic acid. Sodium selenate decahydrate is also used for wastewater treatment, where it reacts with hydrochloric acid to produce polyhedra, which are insoluble and precipitate out. Inorganic compounds such as sodium selenate decahydrate react slowly with plasma at low energies and have been shown to have a phase-chromatographic separation rate of 1.5 cm/min. This chemical also has been shown to have a reaction rate that is faster than other organic compounds, such as phenols.
