Stearoyl-DL-carnitine chloride is a drug that is used in the detection of cancer. It is an analog of carnitine, containing a chloride group in place of the amide group. The difference in charge between this compound and carnitine allows it to pass through cell membranes more easily. Stearoyl-DL-carnitine chloride has been shown to be able to bind to tumor tissues and act as a selective marker for tumor cells, allowing for more effective diagnosis. This drug also induces kinase activities in cancerous cells, which may lead to tumor growth inhibition.
