Salsalate is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug that is used to treat chronic arthritis and other diseases. It is a prodrug of salicylic acid, which inhibits the production of prostaglandin E2 and thromboxane A2. Salsalate has been shown to induce weight loss in obese mice, improve insulin sensitivity, and reduce hepatic steatosis in experimental models. This drug also inhibits the progression of chronic arthritis by reducing inflammation. Salsalate may be beneficial for people with HIV infection because it reduces viral load levels and improves CD4+ T cell counts. The mechanism of action for this drug is not fully understood but may involve hydrogen bonding interactions with proteins.
