7b-Spironolactone is an antiandrogenic drug that is used in the treatment of congestive heart failure, ascites and edema associated with cirrhosis, and high blood pressure. It has a prognostic value in patients with liver cirrhosis and can be used to predict the risk of death. Spironolactone is a member of a class of drugs known as potassium-sparing diuretics because it does not cause the loss of potassium from the body. It is also used as a predictor for hepatic dysfunction, which can be caused by spironolactone. 7b-Spironolactone has been shown to reduce the risk of death in patients with liver cirrhosis who have been assigned to placebo groups.
