1-(3-Sulphonatopropyl)-2-vinylpyridinium betaine is an initiator for polymers. It is a monomer that can be copolymerized with other monomers, such as styrene and acrylonitrile. Copolymerization of 1-(3-sulphonatopropyl)-2-vinylpyridinium betaine with styrene and acrylonitrile produces poly(styrene-co-acrylonitrile) (PSA). The polymerization process involves the release of sulphur dioxide gas from the initiator, which is then converted to sulphuric acid by atmospheric oxygen. This chemical reaction also produces heat that causes the temperature of the polymerization to increase.
