H-Ser(Bzl)-OH is a cell cycle inhibitor that has been shown to inhibit the proliferation of breast cancer cells. H-Ser(Bzl)-OH is a serine hydroxamate and is structurally similar to the natural substrate, serine, which it inhibits. It binds to the active site of protein kinase C (PKC), which then cannot phosphorylate other proteins. This inhibition of PKC leads to impaired cell cycle progression, arrest in G2/M phase, and apoptosis. H-Ser(Bzl)-OH also has antibacterial activity against human bacterial pathogens, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and Mycobacterium tuberculosis.
