Tetrabromo-O-xylene is a halide with the chemical formula CHBr. It is the result of a reaction between bromine and oxygen, which proceeds via the intermediate product trifluoroacetic acid. It can also be synthesized from trichloromethane in the presence of trimethylsilyl chloride and maleic anhydride. Tetrabromo-O-xylene has been shown to cause DNA damage by a red shift in its absorption spectrum, as well as by molecular modeling techniques. This molecule has also been shown to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) such as hydrogen peroxide, superoxide radicals, and hydroxyl radicals when it reacts with certain test organisms. The ROS may be responsible for DNA damage caused by tetrabromo-O-xylene.
