2-(Trifluoromethyl)benzylalcohol is a benzylamine derivative that has been shown to have pharmacological properties. It is used as an esterification agent in organic synthesis and as a reagent for the synthesis of halides and quaternary ammonium salts. 2-(Trifluoromethyl)benzylalcohol has been shown to be a competitive inhibitor of the enzyme acetylcholinesterase, which breaks down the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the nervous system. This compound also has parasympathetic effects on the heart, bronchi, and skeletal muscles by activating or inhibiting certain receptors. The 2-(trifluoromethyl)benzyl alcohol analog can be hydrolyzed by chloride ion to form 2-chlorobenzaldehyde, which is active against bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).
