Trichloro-benzoimidazole is a heterocycle that contains two chlorine atoms, which are substituted at the 2 and 5 positions. It is an analog of 2,5,6-trichloro-1H-benzo[d]imidazole. Trichloro-benzoimidazole is used as a desulfurization agent in organic synthesis. It alkylates nucleophilic compounds to form new carbon-nitrogen bonds. Trichloro-benzoimidazole can be synthesized by reacting chlorobenzene with ammonia chloride and sodium carbonate in water or ethanol. This compound can also be made by reacting dimethylamine with chloride gas in acetone at 0°C using a pressure vessel.
