5,5,6-Trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one is a starting material for the synthesis of prostaglandins and related compounds. It is prepared by reacting butyllithium with acetonitrile in the presence of nucifera and yields of this reaction are determined using chromatographic methods. The interactions of 5,5,6-trimethylbicyclo[2.2.1]heptan-2-one with benzene and benzonitrile have been explored computationally and are found to be energetically favourable. Chromatographic methods have been used to determine the profile of this compound after purification from an extract of lodoicea pentandra leaves and has been shown to contain a number of other natural products including prostaglandins, flavones, coumarins, terpenes, and alkaloids.
