Trimethobenzamide is a drug that is used in the treatment of nausea and vomiting. It has been shown to reduce the number of people who vomit during pediatric abdominal surgery. Trimethobenzamide has also been shown to be effective in reducing the number of people who vomit after taking it for a few days, with no serious side effects. The clinical response to this drug was found to be better when given in combination with an antiemetic agent such as metoclopramide. Trimethobenzamide inhibits the release of gastric acid by blocking the action of histamine at H2 receptors, which are located on parietal cells. This may lead to an increase in gastric pH, which could have pathogenic mechanisms including damage to bacterial cell walls and inhibition of protein synthesis.
