Tetrahydrophthalimide is a synthetic chemical that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of various other organic compounds. It is typically prepared by reacting sodium hydroxide with diphenyl ether followed by hydrolysis of the resulting alkoxide. This reaction, which proceeds via the formation of an ester and an amide, is known as the Bolin-Etherton synthesis. Tetrahydrophthalimide can be used to prepare a number of pharmaceuticals, such as polyclonal antibodies for research purposes and urine samples for testing. The compound can also be used as a reagent in chemical ionization mass spectrometry. Tetrahydrophthalimide has been shown to have a molecular weight of 168 grams and a melting point of 130 degrees Celsius. Tetrahydrophthalimide is also soluble in water with boiling point at 108 degrees Celsius. This compound has been found to cause headaches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and dizziness when ingested orally
