2,11,20,29-Tetra-tert-butyl-2,3-naphthalocyanine (NTB) is a molecular inhibitor that binds to and inhibits the electron transfer from carbon nanotubes. It has been shown to inhibit the uptake of proton and electrons by the surface of metal nanoparticles. The inhibition of electron transfer may be due to its ability to adsorb onto the surface of carbon nanotubes as an acidic molecule. The binding of NTB molecules at a metal surface can lead to synergistic effects with other molecules that also bind to the metal surface.
Maldi-tof data has been collected for NTB and it has been found that this molecule has a high affinity for multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The kinetic study showed that NTB was able to outcompete other molecules in binding sites on the carbon nanotube surface.
