Descrizione

α-Terpinene is a terpene that has been shown to have minimal toxicity in tissue culture. α-Terpinene also has genotoxic effects, which were demonstrated by the induction of DNA strand breaks and chromosomal aberrations in cultured human lymphocytes. α-Terpinene has been shown to be effective against infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, leprosy, and malaria. α-Terpinene is also used as an insecticide and antimicrobial agent. α-Terpinene can be synthesized from linalool or geraniol. This compound is present in a variety of plants including Melaleuca alternifolia (tea tree) and Pinus spruceana (spruce). It is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties that are due to its ability to inhibit prostaglandin synthesis.
