Tetranitrodiphenylmethane is a thermodynamic, reactive chemical that can be used as an amine-containing heterocycle. It has been shown to react with carboxylates, nucleophiles, and sulfoxides. Tetranitrodiphenylmethane is a yellowish crystalline solid with a melting point of about 135 °C and boiling point of about 265 °C. This compound has been shown to undergo transfer reactions with carbanions or protonation by amines. Tetranitrodiphenylmethane reacts with chlorine and deuterium isotopes to form 2,2',4,4'-tetranitro-1-(trichloromethyl)benzene and 2,2',3,3'-tetranitro-1-(dichloromethoxy)benzene.
