1-(Trifluoromethyl)acrylic acid is a diazonium salt that reacts with hydroxyl groups in the presence of a base to form stable, colorless complexes. This reaction mechanism is used for analytical methods such as dispersive solid-phase extraction and matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry. 1-(Trifluoromethyl)acrylic acid can be used to detect low concentrations of analytes in human serum or wastewater treatment. The hydrogen bonding properties of 1-(trifluoromethyl)acrylic acid make it ideal for use in chromatographic analysis because it is more compatible with organic solvents than other diazonium salts.
