Tetrafluoroterephthalic acid (TFPA) is a protonated molecule that is soluble in water and in organic solvents. It is used as an intermediate for the production of polyester polymers, mainly polyethylene terephthalate (PET). TFPA has been found in urine samples and has been shown to be excreted through the kidneys. The distribution of TFPA can be studied with dispersive solid-phase extraction on copper chloride. This process extracts TFPA from a sample by displacing it with a nonpolar solvent, such as hexane or ether. Its fluorescence properties make it useful for detecting hydrogen bond interactions, which are important to transport pathways in cells.
