2,2':5',2''-Terthiophene is a carcinogenic compound that can be found in tobacco smoke. This chemical has been shown to bind to the epidermal growth factor receptor and inhibit its function. It also binds to DNA, forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds with guanine residues and inducing DNA strand breaks. Terthiophene has been shown to have high resistance against oxidation and reduction reactions, making it a good candidate for use as an electron acceptor or donor in redox reactions. Terthiophene also emits light when excited by light of appropriate wavelength, which can be used for biological purposes such as sensing or imaging. It is a chiral compound that can be used as a substrate for molecular hybridization or choroidal neovascularization studies. In addition, 2,2':5',2''-terthiophene has been shown to form x-ray crystal structures with metal ions.
