Tetrafluoro-2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-4-aminobenzotrifluoride (TFATF) is a sulfonium salt that has been used as a catalyst for the oxidation of various organic substrates. TFATF is also an antibacterial agent that inhibits the growth of bacteria by binding to sulfhydryl groups in enzymes. The mechanism of action is inhibition of protein synthesis and DNA replication. TFATF has been shown to be effective against Gram negative and Gram positive bacteria, including methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). TFATF has also been shown to be able to cross the skin barrier and enter into cells by passive diffusion.
