4-(Trifluoromethylthio)benzoyl chloride is an aromatic compound that is used to prepare benzoic acid derivatives. It is prepared by the chlorination of 4-trifluoromethylbenzoyl chloride with a mixture of hydrochloric and hydrobromic acids. 4-(Trifluoromethylthio)benzoyl chloride reacts with benzoyl chloride, diazotizing it in the presence of sodium nitrite, to form benzonitrile. This substance can be converted into benzoic acid by hydrolysis or cyanation. The preparation process involves the production of bromobenzene and then reacting it with benzoyl chloride. The reaction produces a mixture of bromobenzoate and benzoate, which are separated by acidification and then reacted with hydrogen chloride to form the desired product.
