3-(N-Tris[hydroxymethyl]methylamino)-2-hydroxypropanesulfonic acid sodium salt is a benzalkonium chloride with lysine residues. It is an antimicrobial agent that has been shown to be active against many bacteria, fungi, and viruses. 3-(N-Tris[hydroxymethyl]methylamino)-2-hydroxypropanesulfonic acid sodium salt is soluble in water and alcohols, but not in ether or chloroform. This compound has been used to treat autoimmune diseases as well as cancer and infectious diseases. 3-(N-Tris[hydroxymethyl]methylamino)-2-hydroxypropanesulfonic acid sodium salt can be used as a fluorescent marker for DNA extraction from cells or tissue samples. The fluorescence detector is set at neutral ph.
