Tosyl cyanide is a chemical compound that is used as a reagent in organic synthesis. Tosyl cyanide binds to amines and forms an iminium ion, which then reacts with nucleophiles such as trifluoroacetic acid. This reaction proceeds via the nucleophilic attack of the amine on the carbonyl group of malonic acid. The product of this reaction is an acyl chloride and water. Tosyl cyanide has also been shown to inhibit metabolic disorders by binding to acetyl-CoA carboxylase, leading to decreased production of malonyl-CoA and increased concentrations of acetoacetate and β-hydroxybutyrate.
