It has been shown to be reactive with tissue samples and can be used as a buffer in PCR reactions. The reactive functional group of N-tris(Hydroxymethyl)methyl-3-aminopropanesulfonic acid sodium salt reacts with cholesterol esterase, leading to the production of peroxide. This product also has the ability to polymerize, which makes it an effective surfactant.
