Tetraethylammonium fluoride tetrahydrofluoride (TEAF) is a proton donor that has been used to generate polymers with carboxylic acid groups. It can be used in polymer films and as a radical coupling agent. TEAF is also used in the preparation of polycarboxylic acids, which have acidic environments. The polymer film is prepared by mixing TEAF with a solvent such as acetonitrile or deionized water, followed by evaporation of the solvent to form a solid film. TEAF has been shown to react with mercapto groups on silicon surfaces to produce an intermediate radical species. This reaction is accompanied by the formation of an H-atom from the hydrogen atom on the silicon surface and release of chlorine gas from TEAF.
