Tetramethyldiphosphine disulfide is an aromatic hydrocarbon that has been used as a ligand in the preparation of diphosphines. Tetramethyldiphosphine disulfide can be prepared by reacting hydrogen peroxide and tetramethylphosphonium chloride with copper powder. Preparation of diphosphines from tetramethyldiphosphine disulfide is accomplished by treating the ligand with primary alcohols or secondary alcohols to form phosphine-disulfide complexes. Tetramethyldiphosphine disulfide reacts with alkylating agents to form tertiary phosphines. The vibrational and nmr spectra are characteristic of this compound.
