Tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine is a nitrogen-containing radical that is used in the treatment of HIV infection. Tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine has been shown to have antimicrobial properties, which are due to its ability to inhibit the growth of bacteria by binding to copper ions and forming copper complexes. This drug also inhibits the production of colony-stimulating factor and inhibits the polymerization of polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA). Tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine has been shown to be effective against Gram-positive bacteria, such as Staphylococcus aureus. Tris[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]amine does not bind strongly enough to Gram-negative bacteria, such as Escherichia coli, because they have an outer membrane that prevents drug binding.
