TAT is a cell-permeable peptide that binds to the cytosolic calcium, thereby activating the dextran sulfate. TAT has been shown to be able to activate primary cells and experimental models in a variety of biological studies. The activation of TAT is dependent on the function of mitochondrial functions and viral life. The binding of TAT also leads to an increased antibody response and protein transport. TAT has also been found to be effective against HIV infection by binding to IL-2 receptors in monoclonal antibody transfection experiments.
