3,4,5-Trichloronitrobenzene is a synthetic chemical that contains three nitro groups. It has been used as a precursor to other chemicals in the past and is now mainly used for research purposes. The compound is synthesized by reacting anilines with trifluoroacetic acid and activated chloride in the presence of a nucleophilic anion (e.g., sodium sulfide). This reaction produces chloroform as a byproduct. 3,4,5-Trichloronitrobenzene can be reduced to 3-nitroaniline using mercuric chloride or photochemically with ultraviolet light.
