Tetra-n-octylammonium Iodide is a red blood cell chloride ion permeability catalyst. It is used in automotive air conditioning systems, as well as in the production of sulfides and haloalkyls. Tetra-n-octylammonium Iodide is also used to carry out dithiocarbamic reactions. It has been shown to be an effective catalyst for the production of linear polymers, such as polyurethane and polyvinyl alcohol, by using a reaction system that involves an organic solvent. This compound can also be used as a membrane conductance catalyst, where it allows the flow of ions through membranes. The mechanism by which this compound works is not currently known.
