4-(Trifluoromethyl)phthalic acid is a dehydrated phthalic acid derivative, which is an acceptor of hydrogen. 4-(Trifluoromethyl)phthalic acid can be used as a ligand for immobilization of proteins on the surface of membranes. It has also been shown to be able to bind to metal ions and form metal-organic frameworks, which are systems that can be used in solar cells. 4-(Trifluoromethyl)phthalic acid has been found to have high molecular weight and a viscosity that is higher than phthalic acid, which may lead to higher stability in applications such as storage or transportation.
