1,2,2,2-Tetrafluoroethyl Iodide is a gas that has a magnetic moment. It is used as a tracer gas in the analysis of flow in pipes and vessels. The magnetic moment arises from the unpaired electron spins on each fluorine atom. The transition between different rotational states of the molecule is analysed by Doppler spectroscopy using a laser beam. This technique provides information about the kinetic energy distribution of the molecules in their different rotational states. The frequency of the radiation is tuned to match the frequency at which these transitions occur, and this determines how far away from the laser beam axis can be detected. 1,2,2,2-Tetrafluoroethyl Iodide also has an absorption spectrum that can be analysed using a diode laser or other types of lasers with sufficient power to produce an intense beam.
